NB Item – Non-sortable / non-belt-capable goods

NB Item refers to parcels that cannot be sorted automatically via the GLS conveyor system. This includes bulky, awkward or irregularly shaped parcels such as tyres, rolls, sacks or canisters. These goods are handled manually by GLS and are subject to special shipping guidelines. This differentiated handling ensures that even unusual consignments are delivered safely and reliably. NB item shipping complements our standard services and significantly expands your shipping options.

What qualifies as an NB item

Non-belt-capable items (NB items) are parcel formats that cannot be automatically sorted via conveyor belts. These include, for example, metal boxes, canisters, bundled parcels, non-cuboid shipments, tyres or rolls. These parcels deviate from standard dimensions or are unsuitable for automated sorting due to their shape, nature or packaging and therefore require manual handling.

Important to understand about NB items: Non-belt-capable means that the consignment can basically be transported, but must be manually guided through the sorting system. In contrast, non-sortable consignments cannot be processed in our system at all – due to extreme dimensions, unstable packaging or unusual shapes – and must be recorded separately or may be excluded from shipping in individual cases. Below you will find an overview with example images to help you clearly categorise different NB item types.

General rules for NB item shipping

Our NB item shipping is as flexible as your requirements – but certain basic conditions apply. The NB item surcharge is only applied when specific criteria are met, such as for oversized or unusually shaped parcels. Important: we use calibrated measuring equipment – making invoicing consistently traceable and transparent. This gives you full control over your shipping costs – even in peak season.

Parcel dimensions for NB item shipping

Parcels exceeding the dimensions listed here are automatically classified as NB items. This is particularly common when shipping tyres, fabric bales or bundled items – which our services can easily accommodate.

General parcel dimensions for NB item shipping

Length:      ↔    > 1.20 m        Parcels longer than 1.20 m
Height:     ↕     < 3 cm    Parcels lower than 3 cm (not valid for and )

When does GLS declare NB items?

GLS reviews every parcel individually. If a parcel cannot be processed automatically due to its shape, size or packaging, we reserve the right to declare it as an NB item. Important: If a surcharge for overlength has already been applied, no additional NB item surcharge will be added.

All dimensions are measured using certified equipment to ensure fair and transparent invoicing. You can find details and current shipping information anytime in our GLS Glossary.
