Innovative means of transport for last-mile delivery
eScooter in use in Herne
1The electric vehicle (model TRIPL) is particularly suitable for emission-free delivery of small shipments and has been in use in the city center of Herne since November 2018.
With a full charge, it has a range of 100 kilometers and reaches a top speed of 45 km/h.
eVans complement the fleet
2Since 2018, eVans have been complementing the fleet, thereby supporting climate-neutral parcel delivery.
Depending on the model, up to 0.8 tonnes can be transported in the approximately 11 cubic metre cargo area – that equates to 100 to 120 parcels.
Use of cargo bikes
3As city centres are often restricted for delivery vehicles, we have been using various cargo bikes since 2016. With electric pedal assistance, up to 200 kilograms can be transported per trip without any issues.

We place particular importance on long-standing partnerships – they are the basis for the outstanding performance our customers expect from us. Tasks at GLS are diverse – for our own employees as well as our transport partners and their delivery teams.
The principles of cooperation with our transport partners are defined in a Partner Code. It is a fixed component of the contracts between GLS and the transport companies. This includes:
- acting in accordance with applicable laws and regulations
- rejection of discrimination, bribery and corruption
- a commitment to service quality and respectful interaction
We have also appointed an independent ombudsman. He is available at any time – also anonymously – to transport companies and their delivery drivers for any reports of suspected corruption or similarly serious offences.

Our transport partners know their markets and local conditions precisely and can plan accordingly. The best route planning is carried out by the delivery drivers themselves, as they know their delivery areas – including opening hours, contact persons, alternative addresses and access restrictions – best.
We have a strong interest in sustainable, long-term business relationships with our transport partners. Business relationships with more than a third of the company’s transport partners have existed for more than ten years – in some cases even more than 25 years.

The remuneration of delivery drivers is agreed individually between the respective transport company and the employed driver.
What measures does GLS take to improve working conditions for delivery drivers?
In recent years, we have continuously improved processes and procedures and continue to do so. In total, more than 50 million euros have been invested in system optimisation – including in networks, equipment and communication technology, services, tools and processes, as well as in training.
What training does GLS Germany offer?
We offer our transport partners training programmes that address everyday work challenges such as load securing, driving safety, and economic driving, as well as the basics and skills for successful management in operational and administrative roles.
As part of the ISO 9001 quality and environmental management certification by DEKRA, the management of outsourced processes, products and services is audited. This also includes the management of transport companies.
How does GLS Germany communicate with its transport partners?
We have enhanced communication with transport companies to optimise cooperation. Depot dialogues ensure continuous and direct communication. The flow of information between recipients, delivery drivers and depots is constantly improved and simplified through additional data and communication options.

Transport companies can obtain clothing for their drivers from an extensive catalogue of modern, high-quality items.
The offer includes a wide range of different items and takes into account the individual needs of drivers regarding gender, size, season, area of operation, etc.
