Shipping large parcels and volume parcels

In the world of shipping, large parcels and volume parcels are two important categories that require special attention. Large parcels are characterised by their size or weight, which exceed the usual standards of a courier or postal service. Depending on the service provider, these consignments may incur additional charges or require special shipping conditions to ensure safe and efficient delivery. On the other hand, volume parcels are defined not by their weight but by the volume of the shipment when determining the shipping costs. This classification is particularly relevant for light but bulky items, where the volume has a greater impact on transport costs than the actual weight.

Important when shipping large parcels

When it comes to sending parcels with large dimensions or high volume, a so-called threshold value applies. Once a parcel exceeds a volume of 150 litres, the rate for “large parcels” (volume parcels) comes into effect. It is therefore advisable to check the current price list in advance to take any additional costs into account when planning your shipments.

Calculating the parcel volume of large parcels

Whether you have exceeded the threshold value of 150 litres can be determined using a simple mathematical formula: multiply the length, width and height of your parcel in centimetres and then divide this value by 1,000.

Formula for calculating parcel volume

Volume in litres =
Length Ă— Width Ă— Height (in cm) / 1,000

Examples of how to apply the formula:

L 80 cm Ă— W 50 cm Ă— H 20 cm / 1,000 = 80 litres

L 80 cm Ă— W 50 cm Ă— H 40 cm / 1,000 = 160 litres
