The climate protection projects in which GLS Germany participates in collaboration with ClimatePartner investments contribute to the prevention and removal of greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere, as well as to the support of sustainable forest management and reforestation. The impact of these climate protection projects stems from reforestation (approx. 13,000 hectares) and the preservation of forests’ CO2 storage capacity (approx. 8,000 hectares) in Colombia, as well as through the expansion of wind and solar power plants in India, thereby reducing the use of fossil fuel-based power generation facilities and avoiding greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity generation.
At GLS Germany, we offer our business customers the option to participate in supporting the climate protection projects we have selected in collaboration with ClimatePartner as a customized service available upon request. This service involves providing financial support for climate protection projects in an amount calculated as the product of the number of package and freight shipments made by the business customer multiplied by the average greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 equivalents per package and freight shipment) for the respective country of shipment.
ClimatePartner, acting on behalf of General Logistics Systems B.V. (GLS B.V.), acquires so-called Verified Emission Reductions (VERs)—verified emission reductions that confirm that a specific amount of greenhouse gas emissions has been reduced, avoided, or removed through climate protection projects—in a volume corresponding to the greenhouse gas emissions calculated and selected for financial support by GLS Germany (for the fiscal years 2025/26 through 2026/27 (April 1, 2025 – March 31, 2027)). Based on these VERs, ClimatePartner issues its own certificates for GLS Germany’s business customers who utilize financial support for climate protection projects as an on-demand service.
The website of the GLS B.V. provides a detailed overview of the process, from the purchase of VERs to the issuance of certificates by ClimatePartner.
