Parcel delivery with GLS means sustainable parcel delivery*
*Sustainable parcel delivery means that in addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions generated by parcel transport through the GLS Klima Protect environmental strategy — by converting our delivery fleet to alternative drives, using renewable energy, and increasing energy efficiency at our sites — we also voluntarily invest in certified climate protection projects to offset emissions. Additionally and voluntarily, we invest in certified climate protection projects. We firmly believe that sustainable economic success can and must only be achieved in harmony with protecting the environment for future generations and upholding social and human rights.
Depots and infrastructure
For all new constructions, replacements, and expansions, we explicitly consider ecological and social aspects. We invest extensively in modern, environmentally friendly technologies for environmentally sound equipment. This includes the use of rainwater, photovoltaics, recyclable building materials, heat pumps, efficient lighting technology, and thermally insulated building envelopes. At nearly all our locations, we use green electricity.Transitioning the vehicle fleet to e-mobility
We are gradually converting our entire vehicle fleet to vehicles that are emission-free (e.g. electric or hydrogen-powered vehicles) or low-emission (e.g. bio-CNG, bio-LNG, HVO100 vehicles) in operation compared to conventional drives – this applies to both our transport partners and our own company car fleet.
We are also establishing the necessary charging infrastructure in our depots to continuously expand e-mobility.
Urban micro depots
In order to optimise and shorten transport processes in city logistics, we are setting up urban micro depots. From here, deliveries are made using vehicles that are emission-free in operation compared to conventional drives (e.g. electric vehicles or cargo bikes). This saves transport distances, reduces noise, and therefore benefits both people and the environment.Minimising transport distances
We use modern, IT-supported planning tools to continuously improve our operational processes and transport flows. This allows us to consistently minimise our transport distances and avoid greenhouse gas emissions.
Smart city logistics
Smart city logistics: By using e-vehicles and micro depots in city centres, we ease the strain on infrastructure while reducing emissions on the final mile.
As one of Germany's leading parcel delivery companies, we have recently deployed our first hydrogen-powered HGV into regular operation. This highlights our commitment to sustainability and innovation in long-distance transport.
The parcel lockers are open to all providers and can also be used by other delivery companies. In addition, local retailers in Aachen are encouraged to actively use the new lockers to attract customers – even outside regular opening hours.
After just eleven months, we have opened our new parcel distribution centre in Iggensbach near Passau. The centre was built not only with efficiency in mind, but also sets new sustainability standards with a focus on emissions reduction.
