Environmental measures in our logistics and transportation processes
At GLS, we are aware of our impact on the environment. Every parcel and the associated logistics and transportation processes have an impact on natural resources and can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. We want to continue our mission - connecting people around the world - while gradually reducing our environmental impact.

Through our environmental strategy, we are taking a step-by-step approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions
We are convinced that sustainable economic success can go hand in hand with protecting the environment for future generations.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a long-term goal that requires measures across various areas of our company. These include initiatives related to our transportation fleet and urban logistics, the operation of our facilities - such as the use of electricity or heat for our buildings - and our company vehicle fleet.
Depots and infrastructure
We take environmental and social considerations into account in new construction, replacement, and expansion projects. When it comes to equipment, we invest in modern, efficient technologies. For example, at our sites, we may utilize rainwater, solar power, recyclable building materials, heat pumps, lighting technology, or thermally insulated building envelopes. We also prioritize the use of green electricity.Transitioning the vehicle fleet to e-mobility
We are gradually converting our entire vehicle fleet to vehicles that during driving operation use electricity or fuels that create lower emissions than diesel or gasoline fuel (e.g. HVO, biogas, natural gas such as LPG, CNG, LNG) – this applies to both our transport partners and our own company car fleet.
We are also establishing the necessary charging infrastructure in our depots to continuously expand e-mobility.
Urban micro depots
In order to optimise and shorten transport processes in city logistics, we are setting up urban micro depots. From here, deliveries are made using electric vehicles or cargo bikes. This saves transport distances, reduces noise, and therefore benefits both people and the environment.Minimising transport distances
We use modern, IT-supported planning tools to continuously improve our operational processes and transport flows. This allows us to consistently minimise our transport distances and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
GLS Germany's energy policy
At GLS Germany, we are committed to continuously improving our energy-related performance and supporting the purchase of energy-efficient products and services. We strive to continuously reduce our energy consumption and permanently increase energy efficiency in all areas of our business.
To achieve this ambition, we aim to increase energy efficiency (parcels/kWh) in our direct business area (Scope 1 + 2) by 20% by 2030 and by 50% by 2045
(compared to the base year 2021).
These targets will be achieved through the implementation of technologies to increase energy efficiency, regular training and awareness-raising among our employees, and annual review and validation of our energy targets. We are committed to complying with applicable legal and other requirements relating to energy efficiency, energy use and energy consumption.
GLS Germany receives ISO 50001 certification for energy management
By implementing a structured energy management system, we identify and implement targeted opportunities to reduce our energy consumption. ISO 50001 certification is a milestone for us and underscores our environmental initiatives.
Smart city logistics
By using electric vehicles and micro-depots in city centers, we ease the strain on infrastructure and
reduce transportation distances and noise on the last mile..
As one of Germany's leading parcel delivery companies, we have recently deployed our first hydrogen-powered HGV into regular operation. This highlights our commitment to sustainability and innovation in long-distance transport.
Mayor Katja Dörner visited the GLS and VEMO City Depot in Bonn. The focus was on innovative concepts for urban deliveries and the further development of future-oriented logistics solutions.
After just eleven months, we have opened our new parcel distribution centre in Iggensbach near Passau. The centre was built not only with efficiency in mind, but also sets new sustainability standards with a focus on emissions reduction.
